Services

beta reading, copy editing, and proofreading for fiction and creative nonfiction

Professional beta reading

Looking for feedback on character development, world-building, plot structure, and issues with point of view and pacing?

My beta reading service includes:

  • One read-through of your manuscript

  • Comments within the document itself to flag individual items that may need attention

  • A detailed report including commentary on the fundamental elements of your book or short story

  • Thirty minutes of follow-up by email to address any further questions

Copy editing

The scope of copy editing can vary depending on the needs of the manuscript.

My light copy edit includes:

  • Formatting cleanup

  • Correction of errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar

  • Thirty minutes of follow-up by email to address any further questions

My heavy copy edit (some refer to this level of editing as a line edit) includes:

  • Formatting cleanup

  • Correction of errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar

  • Substantive changes such as rewording sentences or passages for clarity and consistency in style and voice

  • Thirty minutes of follow-up by email to address any further questions

I use the Track Changes and commenting features in Microsoft Word to make edits and queries for client review. In both levels of editing, I ensure your manuscript conforms to the appropriate style guide.

Proofreading

At the proofreading stage, your document has been thoroughly edited and is ready for one final pass to catch lingering typographical errors or formatting problems. This is typically the final stage of editing prior to publishing. I accept Microsoft Word files or PDFs for proofreading projects.

on a budget? let’s talk.

Editing costs will vary depending on the scope of the project.

  • Beta reading: flat rate of $.0015 per word

  • Light copy edit: starting at $.01 per word

  • Heavy copy edit: starting at $.015 per word

  • Proofreading: starting at $.008 per word

For copy editing and proofreading projects, I’m happy to provide a complimentary sample edit of 500 to 1,000 words and a no-obligation quote to help you determine if I would be a good fit for you. We will mutually agree to the project fee and the scope of the work in writing before I begin an editing job.
